Today is the first day back to school for the kids in our area. I don’t have kids in school so this day has significance for me only in my memories. However, I can’t deny that there are some external affects as well.
I know that with the first day of school comes really congested traffic, really congested stores, and frustrated and frazzled parents perhaps dropping their kids off at school for the first time ever. The makers of Kleenex® probably turn a huge profit on the first day of school from families of brand new kindergartners alone!
Maybe I’m being a little cynical—so just to even things out—I’ll give you some pluses for the first day of school. This is where my memories come in—so stay with me…
The first day of school means the incredible smell of new school supplies. Remember the smell of a box of 64 Crayola crayons? There’s nothing quite like it. The smell of a brand new backpack with all of the handy pockets and pen holders—the squeak of new shoes that always made you go faster—the fear and excitement of experiencing new subjects and breaking in new teachers. Remember that?
If you have kids in school, embrace their excitement for the first day, sniff those crayons, and remember how cool it was to be a kid.
…And drive safely!
