It’s Groundhog Day!

BJ Bounds

Today is February 2, the day Punxsutawney Phil makes his prediction for the end of winter.  According to Wikipedia, his predictions are about 80% accurate.

Now here’s something I didn’t know before.  There are quite a few other groundhogs that make predictions in the US.  I thought it was just Phil, but maybe because he became a celebrity with the movie “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray.

In any case, there are several more around the county listed by Wikipedia, and they don’t always agree.  Here’s a listing of 2010 predictions:

Groundhog Name Location 2010 Prediction
Gus Athens, Georgia Early spring
Queen Charlotte Charlotte, North Carolina Early spring
Octoraro Orphie Quarryville, Pennsylvania Early Spring
Sir Walter Wally Raleigh, North Carolina Early Spring
Jimmy the Groundhog Sun Prairie, Wisconsin Early spring
General Beauregard Lee Snellville, Georgia Early spring
Smith Lake Jake Graysville, Alabama 6 more weeks of winter
Staten Island Chuck Staten Island (NY City) Early spring
Punxsutawney Phil Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania 6 more weeks of winter
Uni Myerstown, Pennsylvania Early spring
Dunkirk Dave Dunkirk, New York Early spring
French Creek Freddie French Creek, West Virginia Early Spring
Chuckles Manchester, Connecticut 6 more weeks of winter
Woody Howell, Michigan 6 more weeks of winter

Last year Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter.  Last year in the Dallas area we had snowfall of around 12”, something we hadn’t seen since the 70’s.  So I guess that was a good call for him, at least for me.

Today he’s predicting an early spring!  Hurray for Phil!
